AFRICA UNITES IN MUSIC

THE AFRICA CHART

Musicians across Africa are making a lot of waves these days, and African Pop, Hip-Hop, Dance and R&B are getting international attention like never before.  Listeners in every country identify with the common cause of African unity through music.  Radio, Africa’s number one mass communication medium, is leading the way by discovering and promoting local musicians.  Many of Africa’s most listened-to radio stations play a mix of international, regional and local music. The old boundaries are vanishing.   Early in 2007, Radio Express began tabulating airplay on 30 radio stations dominating sub-Saharan Africa.  The result: the Africa Chart, a weekly chart of consolidated airplay targeting young people in Africa in rural and urban locales. The purpose: creating an international stage where African and international artists all strive for upward momentum toward the number one spot.  Acts from Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia have already ranked high along with internationally recognized talents like Kanye West, Rihanna, Sean Kingston and Alicia Keys.
